چکیده
This paper develops a new semi-analytical approach for undrained cylindrical cavity expansions in unsaturated soils. The soil behavior is described within simple, yet effective, critical state-based elastoplastic framework with suction being treated as hardening parameter. Different from its saturated counterpart, the expansion problem soils involves five basic variables, namely, three stress components, specific volume, and suction. A constitutive equation water phase, addition to relationship plus radial equilibrium condition, therefore required construct set of coupled, self-contained differential equations solution boundary value problem. With introduction an auxiliary variable, all these governing can be expressed terms Lagrangian formulation then simultaneously solved through standard numerical procedure. example results show that has significant effects on overall responses and, particular, trajectories calculated representative element at surface. It also interesting observe shear dilation phenomenon, developed during course expansion, usually occurs relatively dense high

Theoretical Undrained Shear Behaviour of Unsaturated Soils
Prediction method for undrained shear behaviour of unsaturated soils is discussed in this paper. Based on Original Cam Clay model, authors have proposed constitutive model for unsaturated soils that the effect of water content is incorporated into superloading surface concept. Firstly, stress path of constant volume shear test is formulated under constant void ratio condition. And relationship ...
متن کاملUndrained Plane-strain Expansion of a Cylindrical Cavity in Clay: a Simple Interpretation of the Pressuremeter Test
A study is made of the problem of interpreting the results of Menard pressuremeter tests on soil in situ. In the test a cylindrical cavity is expanded by internal pressure, and the relation between applied pressure and cavity vulume change is measured. It is shown that the results of a single test are enough to determine a complete stress-strain relation in plane strain, and a simple graphical ...
متن کاملUndrained Behaviour of Clay Reinforced with Surplus Carpet Fibres
A collaborative research programme between University of Bolton and Bradford University is investigating the effect of surplus carpet fibres on the strength as well as other important geotechnical properties of cohesive soils. Initial work concentrates on the manner in which the fibres affect the quick undrained properties of the reinforced soil. Four different surplus carpet fibre types are be...
متن کاملEstimation of Water Retention Curve for Unsaturated Fine Soils
In order to obtain the soil water retention curve of an unsaturated soil which is defined as the relationship between water content and suction, extensive laboratory tests are essential. These laboratory tests are usually costly and time consuming. Moreover, for most practical problems, it has been found that approximate unsaturated soil properties are adequate for analysis. Thus, empirical pro...
متن کاملOn Finite Element Implementation for Cam Clay Model
Cam clay models are one of the popularly used soil plasticity models. Finite element implementation of these models requires integration of constitutive relations and load stepping scheme. There have been considerable advances in the integration of constitutive relations. These methods can be grouped as explicit and implicit methods. The superiority of one over the other lies in the context of ...
